By using a source of global communication I wanted to communicate with all different types of people and understand from more than one group, culture and country what the general impression of the opposite sex is. The words I have acquired in this project may relate to you, they may not, but the beauty is that each word may be from someone who is in a relationship, married, single, gay, straight, italian, spanish, french, from people who believe in love and from people who don’t. You just don’t know.. what you think of the words are up to you.

I used facebook as my source of communication, this choice was obvious to me personally because it seems everything we do, think and say (for some at least) sieve through the facebook system. I sent a message to everyone on my friends list requesting this one word to describe the opposite sex, the outcome was varied and very interesting. From approximately 200 replies there were surprisingly only 3 words matching from the guys and 3 from the girls. i wont ruin it and tell you what they are but they are words with very similar meanings (not so opposite afterall?)

‘Ren’ By Matt Arbuckle

The Unitec 4th year painting exhibit was very impressive, there was a huge variety of painting styles as well as sculpture. Walking around the room you could sense a unique and individual style from each artists work.

Matt’s work (above) caught my eye with his expressive and abstract style while others with their vibrant colour pallet and tediously thought-out and finished paintings.

I have ideas in my head but really I don’t like telling people specifically what the work means to me, I think it’s more interesting when someone brings their own experience to it and interprets it for themselves.

At the moment I am rendering whatever comes to my hand and my eye when they meet on the canvas, Sometimes my intentions are mixed, sometimes not. Sometimes subtle, sometimes not.

Images I have started to create are those of Doom and Euphoria again sometimes mixed, sometimes not. A lot of my images are those of the 80′s, the technology of that decade, the iconic figures even the music and film created in those years. Although these seem to be the themes naturally emerging I plan not to restrict myself.

 I find myself working best through photography, even if I am creating a painting I may photograph a pattern or a scene to work from and keep these for future reference.

While still discovering a personal style I do find myself being influenced by the Artists whom most interest me (some of which I have introduced on this page) they are not only photographers but painters, sculptors, installation artists or any work I find visually interesting, And more importantly anything that catches my eye.

Perhaps the truest testament to Cody Hudsons artwork is that I dont look at his work and see references to other designers or artists, like I do with so many of his contemporaries; instead it feels more referential to every day life (via colour, line and shape) than any particuar aesthetic.

All I can say about Tara Donovans Work is WOW. Her work will leave you asking the question – How? Donovan uses mass amounts of everyday objects including paper plates, straws, toothpicks, buttons and much more to create large scale sculptures that often have a biomorphic quality. I was lucky enough to visit an exhibition of Donovans at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Museum in April this year, the installations are breathtaking and give an amazing sense of space.

This is a photograph of “The Last Tango” on the walls of Paris, a Stencil by Blek Le Rat in 1986, Immediately this stencil is visually appealing to me. The stencil is dramatic, it shows passion and its European roots.

Blek Le Rat has a similar style to the more commonly known artist ‘Banksy’, although the famed Banksy has been quoted for saying “Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original I find out Blek Le Rat has done it as well… Only twenty years earlier.”

This is Blek Le Rats first Stencil. Beginning in Paris in the 1980′s, He was stenciling rats running along the city walls…. Why Rats? Because they create fear and they were synonymous with the invasion (in France) and that they were the only wild animals (along with pigeons) who lived in the city or more correctly would survive in the city.

I found this stencil at Victoria Skate Park in Auckland City, I am not sure of the artist as there is not signature or name but I think this image is beautiful – an embracing and engulfing depiction of love.
